Why Do Routine Eye Exams Matter?

Routine eye exams are an essential part of preventative healthcare. With aging eyes come increased risks for age-related diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. These conditions can develop slowly, often without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

With regular eye exams, we can detect these diseases early, helping prevent vision loss and manage your eye health.

Enhancing Your Vision Care Attentiveness

Comprehensive eye exams are just the start of proactive vision care. It’s equally important to protect your eyes daily. This can involve wearing sunglasses to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays, taking regular breaks from screen time, maintaining a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking.

Is it hard to read small print? Do you find yourself squinting or struggling in low light? These could be signs of age-related eye changes. If you’re over 50, we recommend more frequent eye exams to monitor these changes.

Schedule regular eye exams, stay aware of changes in your vision, and take steps every day to protect your eye health.

A Guide to Your Eye Exam Process

Regular eye exams are the foundation of maintaining good vision health and spotting potential issues at an early stage. At the Vision Center of Delaware, we take a comprehensive and personalized approach to cater to your eye care needs.

Although specific recommendations and tests can differ based on your eye health, we consistently follow a 3-step eye exam process to provide a thorough evaluation and meticulous care.

Step 1: Preliminary Tests

The first step in our eye exam process involves preliminary tests. This includes thoroughly reviewing your medical history, visual acuity tests, and a detailed examination of your eye structures.

We also check how well your eyes work together, examining your eye movements and alignment to assess if your eyes function properly.

Tip: If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them along for this appointment. They provide valuable information about your vision history.

Step 2: Detailed Examination

Next, we conduct a detailed examination of your eye structures. This includes checking your pupil reactions to light and examining the front part of your eyes (cornea, iris, and lens) using a special microscope called a slit lamp

Next, we may perform fundus photography, which captures images of the back of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve. You’ll be able to see what we see, supporting our commitment to patient education.

During this step, we check for signs of common eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

Tip: During your first eye exam, we’ll dilate your eyes for a clearer view of the back and inner eye structures. The dilation may cause temporary light sensitivity or blurred vision, so bring sunglasses and arrange a ride home.

Step 3: Consultation & Plan

Finally, we discuss your exam results and any necessary next steps. This might involve prescribing glasses or contact lenses, recommending further diagnostic tests, or discussing treatment options for identified eye conditions.

Tip: Come prepared with questions. A routine eye exam is your opportunity to learn more about your eye health and how to enhance it.
